Summary

 
 
Funded by an early CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, the aims of this project have been to design, implement and evaluate hypertext materials in middle school science classes. The system that I developed, CoMPASS uses dynamic graphical representations in the form of concept maps to help students understand the numerous interrelationships between concepts and principles. To date CoMPASS has been used by over 500 eighth and sixth grade students. I have been studying students' changing representations as they learn using CoMPASS, as well as the issues and challenges in integrating informational text in inquiry-based science classes.
